City Mosquito Pest Spraying Program Update THIS NEWS ITEM EXPIRED 10/31/2013 AND IS NOT LONGER ACTIVE!
9/11/2013 Spraying for mosquito pests is a common preventive practice across the nation but especially in southern areas such as Shawnee where Mosquitos are common. This particular year, more rain than average has exasperated the issue and we have experienced many more citizen complaints in regard to the mosquito population. Mosquitos do transmit diseases but we are fortunate in our part of the world that few of these are deadly to humans. However Mosquitos do provide the transit for heart worms and other illnesses in the animal population and can still pose threats to humans so overall, the pest must must be controlled.
The spraying program has been active in Shawnee for decades although generally unnoticed due to the overnight process that is used during calmer parts of the day. This allows the solution to settle into the low lying water areas interrupting the mosquito life cycle. Due to the large number of complaints from citizens this year and an overall I crease of the pest population, the spraying program has been accelerated and is covering more area to better control the issue.
The city strives to provide the best overall living conditions for our citizens and must continue to provide services that benefit the health and safety of the community. Expires:10/31/2013 Comments:
