CITY OF SHAWNEE JOB DESCRIPTION
PAY RANGE:6 - $11.06/hr

JOB SUMMARY: This is a nonexempt position that requires manual and semi-skilled work. The incumbent employee works under supervision of Maintenance II and/or Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection Supervisor and performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in assigned areas. “Job descriptions may be modified based on City needs and employees may be required to perform function beyond those described below and employees are “at will employees” in that either party may terminate the employment relationship.”
•Keeps water and wastewater system operating efficiently. Assists in repair of water and sewer line breaks. Lays, Connects, tests, and disinfects water and sewer lines.
•Relieves sewer line stoppages by assisting/operating hydro-flusher to clear pipe of congesting materials.
•Cleans and repairs manholes to maintain City and ODEQ standards. Raises manholes.
•Inspects system. Inspects taps made by contractor to maintain quality control of tapping process.
•Locates and raises valve boxes. Assists in broken valve replacement. Assists in valve and water line mapping. Flushes water mains.
•Repairs and replaces fire hydrants, notifying fire department when fire hydrant is out of service.
•Maintains and repairs water meters of all sizes.
•Locates water and sewer lines in absence of supervisor. Operates jackhammer. Operates emergency call truck. Excavates trenches and installs shoring.
•Troubleshoots minor mechanical equipment problems.
•Troubleshoots and locates causes of water quality complaints.
•May detect hazardous atmospheres and correct before entry.
•Detects and reports or corrects unsafe working conditions to supervisor.
•Reports to assigned truck supervisor (Maint. 2), and Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection Supervisor and performs other duties as assigned.
•Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
•Must possess valid Oklahoma driver’s license and maintain driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier. Must obtain valid Oklahoma Class A commercial driver’s license within six months of employment.
•Must Obtain ODEQ Class D water and wastewater operator certification with one year of employment.
•General maintenance experience.
•Knowledge of water and sewer line construction and maintenance.
•Knowledge of water and wastewater operation.
•Knowledge of tools, equipment and their use.
•Ability to effectively communicate with others. Ability to follow instructions and work with others.
•High school or equivalent education.
•Previous experience in water and waste water construction experience.
SUPERVISION REQUIRED: Works under direct supervision of assigned Supervisor.
SUPERVISION GIVEN: None given.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL HAZARDS:
•Must be willing to periodically perform stand-by and call-back work during off duty hours.
•Most of work is performed outdoors subject to inclement weather conditions. Occasionally work is performed in confined areas and awkward positions or on rough, uneven terrain or excavations.
•Possible exposure to vibration, noise, smells, dust, dirt, water and/or hazardous chemicals.
•Must possess physical flexibility to bend, twist and reach; mobility to climb and walk; dexterity to operate machinery and tools on uneven surfaces; and stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions.
•Must have strength to pull, lift, and/or push objects up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis.
•Must have knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
•Possible exposure to moving equipment, slippery surfaces, chemicals, and/or hazardous materials.
SPECIAL LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
•Class D Water and Wastewater License.
•Oklahoma Class A commercial driver’s license
•Confined Space Entry Certification.
