JOB TITLE: Legal Assistant FLSA: Non-exempt
DEPARTMENT: City Attorney PAY RANGE: 33K 44k
ACCOUNTABLE TO: City Attorney
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the City Attorney, performs difficult and complex clerical,administrative and legal assignments. Entails performing a wide variety of such tasks with minimal direction, although work is normally subject to review for conformity with established
policies and procedures. Also involves extensive contact in person or by phone with the general public, public officials and civic leaders.
Physical requirements include walking, bending, stooping, prolonged sitting, and lifting up to 10#s (greater with assistance).
Demonstrated experience in spelling and proper use of grammar
Knowledge of legal terminology
Able to perform all tasks with high degree of accuracy
Able to think critically, plan and direct own work
Able to communicate orally and in writing with others
Able to relate well with public
Able to maintain confidentiality
MAJOR AREA OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
Prepares reports and documentation related to the operations of the City Attorneys office, Municipal Court and others connected with a wide variety of legal proceedings.
Types and helps compose contracts, ordinances, resolutions and bond documentation.
Performs other administrative tasks including maintaining work schedules and appointment calendars for the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney.
Keeps track of legal deadlines.
Maintains a computerized filing system.
Prepares correspondence, memoranda, reports and other such material.
Receives and screens telephone calls.
Reviews, prepares payment documentation and maintains files on claims.
Acts as receptionist for visitors to the department.
Prepares and monitors budget, issues purchase orders and payment
Assists City Attorney in prosecution in Municipal Court
Performs legal research
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: None required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
*Equivalent to undergraduate degree in public administration, human relations, business administration, communications or closely related field
*Type at 50 WPM or greater
*Experience with word processing, spread sheets, power point applications
A minimum of two years previous experience in legal research, legal report writing, preparation of ordinances, or other aspects of law or closely related field.
