Job Description

JOB TITLE: Cemetery Maintenance Worker I
FLSA: non-exempt
DEPARTMENT: Operations
PAY RANGE: Grade 6, starting at $11.56/hr
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Cemetery Supervisor

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general direction performs manual and semi-skilled work of the Cemetery Division. Work varies, requiring judgment within established policies and procedures.

• Physical demands include bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, reaching, walking on rough or uneven terrain, kneeling, and pulling or lifting up to 80#s (greater with assistance).
• Work is often performed in uncontrollable working conditions of inclement weather of heat, cold, dampness, dust, moderate noise levels, and hazardous chemicals;
• Must possess State Certified as a Spray Tech;
• Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.

• Performs a variety of maintenance tasks and minor repairs;
• Mows, trims, waters, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up trash and debris, and performs other tasks to keep the cemetery in good order;
• May operate back-hoe and riding mowers;
• Operates a weed eater and applies herbicides as required;
• Troubleshoots minor mechanical equipment problems;
• Detects hazardous atmosphere and corrects problems before entry into confined space;
• Detects and reports and/or corrects unsafe working conditions of immediate work sites to the supervisor;
• Prepares daily reports of activities;
• Work is mostly performed outdoors subject to inclement weather conditions of heat, cold, and dampness and may be exposed to hazards and chemicals;
• Contacts with other agencies, departments, the public, and employees is incidental to work requiring common courtesy and respect;

SUPERVISION – RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: Generally none. May serve as a lead worker as assigned.

• Graduation from high school, or its equivalent, PLUS
• One year general work experience; experience in operating all mowing and related equipment, and grounds maintenance desirable;
• Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and maintain a status of insurability.

• May periodically perform stand-by and call-back work during off duty hours;
• Must possess the ability to follow written and verbal instructions;
• Must possess the ability to represent the City in a positive manner with the public and bereaved families;
• Working hours could change seasonally to accommodate task/duty;
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of grounds and facilities management including construction, repair, and maintenance methods to enhance the facilities;
• Is responsible for equipment of value that requires care to prevent damage and the use of proper safety equipment following established safety procedures to prevent injury;
• Must possess knowledge of safe work practices and procedures;
• May be assigned to other work areas of the City in the off season;
• Performs other duties that may be assigned.
