City of Shawnee, Oklahoma

Sister Cities International LogoThe Sister Cities Council of the City of Shawnee, Oklahoma was organized in 1989.  Resolution No. 5541 was adopted by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Shawnee, Oklahoma, U.S.A. on September 18, 1989, to invite Nikaho, Japan to become partners in a sister city program.

Nikaho, Japan, a town of 12,400 people, located in northern Japan on the coast of the Sea of Japan, has something in common with the City of Shawnee wherein both communities have played a similarly important role in the growth of the ferrite industry and electronics.

The City of Shawnee has a TDK Corporation plant in operation and the City of Nikaho has five (5) TDK plants.  The City of Shawnee entered into an agreement with the City of Nikaho, Japan on September 28, 1990.  The purpose of this organization is educational, economical, and charitable.

Both cities have resolved to unite as Sister Cities in order to promote understanding and friendship among its peoples and strengthen the bonds between the two cities. It is a mutual hope that by becoming sister cities to make a contribution to the development of lasting relationships.

Both parties, through this step toward a friendly relationship, have carried on a wide range of exchanges and cooperation for its mutual benefit in the fields of economic development, culture, art, education, sports, science and technology and youth exchanges as well as municipal administration and urban development in order to contribute to a common prosperity and friendship.

The organizationís objectives are :

    1. To cause the citizens of Shawnee and of similar cities of foreign nations to acquire a consciousness of each other and to understand one another as individuals, as members of their communities, as citizens of their countries, and as a part of the family of nations.
    2. To foster a continuing relationship of mutual concern between the City of Shawnee and the people of similar cities of other nations.
    3. To actively seek ideas for, plan, and implement programs which will increase international awareness, education, and understanding.
    4. To participate as an organization in the promoting, fostering, and publicizing of local, state, and national programs of international municipal cooperation organizations, and thereby to encourage other organizations and resident of American communities to engage and participate in such programs.
    5. To promote and promulgate a long range economic development program

The Sister Cities Council consist of the following:

Officers: Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer

Committee Chairs: Fundraising, Host Programs, Delegation, Education, Publicity, Promotion, Education Committee Advisor (who shall be the Principal of the Shawnee Middle School),

The City Manager and Mayor.

The Executive Committee consists of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer. Immediate Past-Chairman, City Manager, and Mayor.

The members of the Council will be appointed by the Executive Committee with the exception of the City Manager and Mayor, by virtue of positions, for a one year term beginning in January.

Vacancies on the Council shall be appointed by the Mayor, City Manager and Council Chairman.

The regular meetings of the Council are held on the second Tuesday of each month in the downstairs Emergency Management Center conference room located in City Hall, 9th and Broadway, Shawnee, Oklahoma.
