Jimmy Gibson, Dept:Fire Dept - City Hall Position:Fire Chief Jimmy Gibson is the Fire Chief for the city of Shawnee, Oklahoma. He began his employment with the Shawnee Fire Department in February of 1989. After serving two years as firefighter, he promoted to Fire Equipment Operator and served in that capacity for three years. Chief Gibson promoted to the Fire Marshal’s Office in December of 1994. While serving as Fire Prevention Officer, he conducted fire cause and determination investigations, inspections, was instrumental in the adoption of Operation Fire Safe, a nationally recognized juvenile fire setter intervention program, and headed the public education efforts for the department. He also worked with the department’s clown program each year during fire prevention week. Chief Gibson promoted to Acting Fire Chief in August of 2007 and then on to Chief of the department in October, 2007.
Chief Gibson is certified with the Council of Law Enforcement Education and Training and is a nationally certified Emergency Medical Technician. He successfully completed the Fire Inspection Principles and Fire Suppression: Structures and Systems courses at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Chief Gibson responded to the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City and participated in search and rescue efforts in Midwest City after the devastating tornado on May 3, 1999.
Chief Gibson holds an Associate of Science degree in Fire Protection Technology, an Associate of Applied Science degree in Municipal Fire Protection, an Associate of Science degree in Police Science, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership.
In looking to the future of the Shawnee Fire Department, Chief Gibson would like to see more emphasis placed on training efforts, as well as maintain a pro active approach to public education. He believes it is imperative to work closely with the Emergency Management Division and the Shawnee Police Department to encourage a team approach in regards to public safety.
He and his wife, Kristi, have two daughters, Cailey and Cierra. Chief Gibson’s hobbies include travel, boating, and enjoying bluegrass music. He is a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
