Here are a few things you need to know about polycarts:
- The City Commission voted to begin using polycarts for trash disposal city wide for all citizens of Shawnee at the meeting on June 4, 2007.
- Allied Waste will begin delivering polycarts to Shawnee residents beginning mid-July, 2007. They will be set and literature will be attached to answer many of your questions. If you have other questions please contact Allied Waste at 405-275-9061.
- Automated pickup will begin August 1, 2007.
- The polycarts will be dark green in color and will have serial numbers.
- The polycart will be for the residents use. The resident will leave the polycart if they move or be charged for the polycart.
- Homeowners will not be charged for the first polycart. If they need a second polycart, the charge will be $4 a month. That will be placed on the utility bill.
- Your regular trash pickup day may change. Yard waste will be picked up on Wednesdays Please do not use the polycart for yard waste, use bags and bundles.
- If you are physically unable to handle the polycart, contact Allied Waste at 275-9061. They will ask that you submit a Doctor’s note stating that you are physically unable to take the polycart to the curbside and the polycart will be picked up house-side.
- On your collection day, the polycart should be in place in front of your home by 7 a.m. You may remove it after the garbage has been collected and should remove it by 5 p.m. Place the polycart with the handle away from the curb.
- Don't put your polycart next to a mailbox or within 12 feet of a parked car. Shawnee will allow cars to be parked on the street on collection days but they must be at least 12 feet away from a polycart. Remember, the idea is that an automated arm will grab the polycart and empty it. No one wants that arm grabbing something else.
- Don't put the polycarts along the alley back of your house. The automated trucks can't use the alley because they are too narrow and dangerous.
- The commission has chosen a plan which also calls for green waste pickup (yard clippings, etc.) on a weekly basis. Although house-side service is preferred for the yard waste pickup you may put yard waste along the alley. Be sure and coordinate with Allied Waste if you choose the alley option on yard waste at 275-9061.
- There was some discussion of selling additional tags or bags for use when a resident has too much trash. The city will wait and see if there is a demand or need for this option.
- The city is supplementing this plan for the first year but will cut that supplement in subsequent years. The $12 monthly fee is expected to go to $13 in July, 2008, $13.75 in 2009, $14.25 in 2010 and $14.55 in 2011.
- Businesses will continue to contract service as they have in the past.
- Don't worry about having too much waste at special times of the year such as Christmas or occasionally at other times. But if you consistently put out too much to be picked up, you will be asked to rent a second polycart.
- Bulk collections (sofas, chairs etc.) haven't been part of the contract in the past but Allied has been picking them up anyway. This practice will no longer be maintained. Residents are allowed to dump 3 cubic yards one time per month at the Canadian Valley landfill or Oklahoma City landfill sites.
- The Canadian Valley Landfill on Highway 9A is open every Saturday morning from 8 to noon Memorial Day through Labor Day and every other Saturday during the fall and winter months. Directions to the landfill : From Highland Street in Shawnee go approximately 6.5 miles East of Shawnee to Hwy 9A and turn left 1 mile then turn right onto Independence (also known as E1150 rd). Present your drivers license and water bill to the attendant.
- The landfill in Oklahoma City is available Mon-Fri. from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 am to noon. The address to this landfill is 7001 S. Bryant, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73149-just East of Crossroads Mall on I-240.
- The Brooksville Landfill near Tecumseh will also take refuse, but they charge a fee based on tonnage. The number to the Brooksville Landfill is 405-598-3893
Please be patient with us as we start this process. Remember that Allied Waste representatives are available at 405-275-9061
