Since the City of Shawnee began keeping
computerized records in 1995 of sewer line maintenance and through the end
of the year 2000, the sewer crew has flushed 2,000,000 feet (378.8 miles)
of sewer line, which is a yearly average of over 333,000 feet (63.1
miles). Employees in this department include Scott Moore, Calvin Wilson,
Craig Lee, Loren Greenlee, and Craig Sutton.
The maintenance program, which consists of
regular flushing and checking of lines, root treatment, and pipe bursting
lines, has been very effective in reducing the number of emergency calls
over the years and supplying better quality of service to the customer.
There was $200,000 in 1996-97 budget year and
$400,000 every year since dedicated to replacing sewer lines beyond
repair, totaling $1,800,000. Regular checking and flushing has had a
direct impact in the number of emergency calls, which in turn reduces
sewer claims and overtime.
In 1996 we had 263 emergency calls (line
stoppages effecting customers) and had 725 maintenance checks
(preventative work before the line stops up). In 2000 we had 36 emergency
calls and 1580 maintenance checks.
In the last five years we have purchased a
flusher truck, confined space equipment, easement machine, portable lift
station pump, 1 ½ ton lift station truck with crane, and a vacuum
trailer. We are continuing to upgrade the sewer lift stations, currently
planning to do a rehab project on Golden Acres lift station.
