Water Safety Instructor Course

Class Description
  • The Water Safety Instructor Certification Course trains WSI candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants progress.
Class Prerequisites
  • WSI candidates must be at least 16 years old
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills (on the first day of class):
      • Swim the following strokes consistent with Level 4:
          • Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke 25 yards
          • Butterfly 15 yards
      • Back float for 1 minute (floating or sculling)
      • Tread water for 1 minute
Certification Requirements
  • Complete the online Orientation to the Swimming & Water Safety Program
  • Complete the online Water Safety Instructor Course
  • Attend all class sessions
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
  • Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam


Lifeguard Certification Course

RED CROSS CERTIFICATION 
You need to be of 15 years of age to attend this class.

 **If you are applying to work at Shawnee Splash or Oklahoma Baptist University you qualify for a discount. In your response to me (mentioned later in the email) please indicate that you qualify. I will verify, and send you additional information.  $50.00 new certification / $40.00 renewal

 The rate for new participants is $150.00 ---  for recertification $75.00

 *Payment is required to hold and reserve your spot for the course. (Space is limited) If you are paying with a check, please make it out to Shawnee Splash.*If you have a special need, contact the instructor before class, so that she can adjust the course where possible.

 Course Dates and Times:

 March 31 6:00 pm-8:00pm & April 1st 8:00am- evening & possibly April 2nd 2:00pm

 *Class length will depend upon how fast we can move thorough the material. It is possible that the class will not take the full length of time above. The book says the course is designed to be completed in 25 hours and 20 minutes; however, depending on the class, that is a long estimate.

Participants need to be able to do the following before the start of class

1.      Swim 300 Meters without pause using the freestyle or breath stroke (not timed)

2.      Tread water for 2 minutes using legs. 

3.      Retrieve a 10 pound object from the deep end of the pool, then swim the length of the pool on your back (object on your chest) 

*The 3rd event is timed. You must be able to do this in 1 minute and 40 seconds.
*Participants may take as many attempts as needed to pass the requirements. (Within reason)
*These events are here to ensure you are physically fit to become a lifeguard.
*Those who are unable to come prepared to class, or cannot complete one of the requirements will not receive a refund.

 Completion of the class does not guarantee employment. You will receive your Lifeguarding/AED/CPR/ First Aid certification upon the completion of this class. The certification will be good for 2 years beginning on the date we complete the class.
