 JOB SUMMARY:   This is a non-exempt position that requires manual and semi-skilled work.  The incumbent employee reads and records water usage and connects and disconnects water service.  “Job descriptions may be modified based on City needs and employees may be required to perform functions beyond those described below and employees are “at will employees” in that either party may terminate the employment relationship.”

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Reads water meters in the field on an assigned route and enters the usage of water into a hand held computer.  Meter readings may not be estimated.
  • May have to perform re-reads.
  • Makes turn-ons and turn-offs at water meters.
  • Tests meters to ensure proper functioning, reports defects and cleans out meter boxes as necessary. 
  • May assist in the installation, replacement and or removal of meters.
  • Inspects location of water service for water leaks and makes necessary field repairs.
  • Detects hazardous atmospheres and corrects before entry.
  • Detects, reports and/or corrects unsafe working conditions.
  • May be required to function as a line maintenance worker.
  • Reports to Lead Meter Reader and performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and maintain driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Must obtain ODEQ Class D water and wastewater operator certification within one year of employment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others.
  • Ability to handle potentially irate customers with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to use pipe wrench, curb stop wrench and other small hand tools to repair and maintain water meters and meter boxes and to connect and disconnect service.
  • Ability to read and record information accurately into hand held computer.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous computer (PC) training or experience.
  • Knowledge of City streets and addresses.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:  Work under general supervision of Lead Meter Reader

SUPERVISION GIVEN:  None required.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL HAZARDS:

  • Must be willing to periodically perform stand-by and call-back work during off duty hours.
  • Most of work is performed outdoors subject to inclement weather conditions.  Occasionally work is performed in confined areas and awkward positions or on rough, uneven terrain or excavations.
  • Possible exposure to vibration, noise, smells, dust, dirt, water and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Must possess physical flexibility to bend, twist and reach; mobility to climb and walk; dexterity to operate machinery and tools on uneven surfaces; and stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions.
  • Must have strength to pull, lift, and/or push objects up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis.
  • Must have knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Possible exposure to moving equipment, slippery surfaces, chemicals, and/or hazardous materials.

SPECIAL LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Class D Water and Wastewater License.
  • Confined Space Entry Certification.
