Volunteers needed to assist the City of Shawnee with the Homeless Resource Center

Shawnee, Oklahoma, 26 July, 2022 – Thanks to the efforts of multiple community groups and numerous volunteers, the Homeless Resource Center, operated by the City of Shawnee, is open for the homeless.

The resource center is housed at the Shawnee Rescue Mission located at 506 S Beard Street. City staff from multiple departments worked with community partner organizations and volunteers to gather supplies and other items designed to assist the homeless with basic needs and other resources that can ultimately help them move away from homelessness.

The City is grateful to the initial cadre of volunteers, who have done a remarkable job in staffing the resource center. Additional volunteers are needed so that the center can be open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 8 am to 6 pm. The volunteers will assist clients with job searches, connect them with organizations serving the homeless, and help clients obtain documentation tailored to their individual needs.

The volunteer positions are part-time and unpaid, with a commitment of 4-6 hours per week. Volunteering does not entitle the volunteer to a full-time paid job with the Homeless Program or the City of Shawnee. The volunteer will not be provided with any benefits traditionally associated with employment, and the volunteer is responsible for their own insurance coverage.

To learn how you can become a volunteer, please contact the City of Shawnee’s Homeless Program Coordinator Erika Genty at 405-878-1543 or Erika.Genty@ShawneeOK.org.
