MLK, Jr. Day Love Your Block Cleanup a Neighborhood Success

Shawnee, Oklahoma, January 19, 2023 – In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the City of Shawnee’s Love Your Block program joined Dunbar Heights neighbors and volunteers from across the community in a cleanup day on January 14, 2023. With the help of 38 volunteers, four roll-off trailers were filled with over 64,000 lbs. of debris.

Volunteers removed dead trees, large brush piles, and did an overall sweep of litter across the neighborhood of Dunbar Heights. Bailey Cotts, Vista Coordinator of Love Your Block said, “Many organizations and local citizens volunteered their time and energy to make this cleanup day possible. Thank you to Community Renewal, Higher Ground Church, Dunbar Historic Neighborhood Association, and BancFirst. Special thanks go to Shawnee Milling Company for the staff and organizational support, and Central Disposal for providing their assistance.” The Love Your Block program is a partnership with the City of Shawnee and the Bloomberg Foundation and offers residents many opportunities to help the City and move the community forward.

“The City of Shawnee so much appreciates the support of the organizations and volunteers that make a clean-up effort like this possible. We hope to support other neighborhoods in their efforts to improve our community,” said Andrea Weckmueller-Behringer, City Manager.
