Santa Fe Depot Rehabilitation Project Commences, Preserving History and Enhancing Community

Shawnee, Oklahoma, March 4, 2024 – The City of Shawnee is excited to announce the commencement of construction for the Santa Fe Depot Roof and Exterior Rehabilitation Project. The Shawnee City Commission recently awarded the exterior restoration bid to Downey Contracting, LLC for a total of $1,286,000.00, and construction will begin on March 18, 2024.

While the conceptual cost estimate was initially lower than the final construction cost, this significant undertaking is made possible by the funding from the half-cent sales tax measure approved by voters in 2018. The funds for this project were diligently accumulated over time, while City staff have been actively working towards the design of the rehabilitation project, all of which reflects the City’s deep commitment to preserving its unique railway depot.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, the Santa Fe Depot holds a special place in the heart of Shawnee, serving as a symbol of its rich history and heritage. Built in 1903 and 1904, the Depot was a vital hub for transportation and commerce throughout the first seventy years of its existence, and until just a few years ago, served the community as a historical museum.

Recognized as an important historic landmark, the Depot restoration requires specific architectural expertise as well as an equally knowledgeable construction contractor. For this special project, GH2 Preservation Architects and Downey Contracting, LLC will ensure that their architects and engineers contribute to a quality project for the community. “We are excited to embark on this journey of preserving and enhancing the Santa Fe Depot,” said Ed Bolt, Mayor of Shawnee. “This project not only restores a historic building but also contributes to the revitalization of our community.”

The rehabilitation project is expected to be complete within one year, and the City looks forward to working with the contractors and the Pottawatomie County Historical Society to ensure all work is completed as planned and in a timely manner. The City of Shawnee cannot wait to share this restored gem with residents and visitors alike.
